// Data Collections

The NCCS houses curated data collections that include atmosphere, ocean, land, and flood data, both current and historical, as well as operational Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) weather analysis data and forecasts that are updated four times daily.

Our public services help users find data holdings by model type (atmosphere, land, ocean, and coupled atmosphere/ocean), modeling project, and modeling organization.

// Atmosphere-Based Products

Aerosols

Aerosols such as dust, sea salt, organic and black carbon, and sulfate, interact both directly and indirectly with the Earth's radiation budget and climate. Climate modelers use observational aerosols as input to their climate models and generate output containing modeled aerosols.

Cloud and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES)

CERES products include both solar-reflected and Earth-emitted radiation from the top of the atmosphere and the Earth's surface. CDS provides access to CERES shortwave and longwave radiation data through the obs4MIPs project in the ESGF data node.

Cloud Library

CDS provides access to simulated cloud data sets to be used in the development of large-scale cloud parameterization (microphysics, subgrid cloud distributions, overlapping, convection and downdraft) or in studying remote sensing signals through instrumental simulators. Access to the Cloud Library requires an account that can be requested online.

ECMWF

The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts' ERA-Interim reanalysis uses the Integrated Forecast System, cycle 31r2 (IFS-Cy31r2) and covers the period from 1979 to the present. CDS provides access to the ERA-Interim reanalysis data through the ESGF ana4MIPs project (which was superseded by CREATE-IP) for the purpose of comparing Reanalysis data to Observational data, the IPCC AR5 Climate Model data, as well as other Reanalyses.

Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP)

The Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) monthly precipitation dataset combines observations and satellite precipitation data into 2.5°x2.5° global grids. CDS provides access to GPCP data through the obs4MIPs project in the ESGF data node.

GMAO MERRA

The Global Modeling and Assimilation Office's (GMAO) Modern Era-Retrospective Analysis for Research and Analysis (MERRA) is a NASA reanalysis using a modern satellite data and the Goddard Earth Observing System Data Assimilation System Version 5 (GEOS-5). focused on historical analyses of the hydrological cycle. CDS provides access to GMAO's reanalysis data through the ESGF data node.

JMA JRA-25

The Japanese Meteorological Agency's (JMA) Japanese 25-year Reanalysis project (JRA-25) is a reanalysis using the JMA numerical assimilation and forecast system. It covers the period from 1979 to 2004 with the goal of enhancing the analysis of the Asian region. CDS provides access to the JRA-25 reanalysis data through the ESGF ana4MIPs project (which was superseded by CREATE-IP) for the purpose of comparing Reanalysis data to Observational data, the IPCC AR5 Climate Model data, as well as other Reanalyses.

Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM)

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) monitors and studies tropical and subtropical rainfall and CDS provides access to this data through the obs4MIPs project in ESGF data node.

BioClim – Fine-Scale Climate Scenarios with Annual Time Steps, 2010-2100, for the Contiguous United States

This dataset comprises two climate scenarios for the contiguous United States at a resolution of ~800m x 800m, with annual time slices from 2010 to 2100. Data include nineteen bioclimatic variables that are commonly used in ecological analyses.

BIOCLIM

MODIS Leaf Area Index and Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (LAI/FPAR)

MODIS FPAR/LAI is the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active radiation that a plant canopy absorbs for photosynthesis and growth in the 0.4 – 0.7nm spectral range. Leaf area index is the biomass equivalent of FPAR. CDS has published the data in the obs4MIPs project in ESGF.

MODIS

NASA Earth Exchange (NEX) Downscaled Climate Projections (NEX-DCP30)

NEX-DCP30 is a set of high resolution, bias-corrected climate change projections that can be used to evaluate climate change impacts on processes that are sensitive to finer-scale climate gradients and the effects of local topography on climate conditions.

NEX-DCP30

NASA Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections (NEX-GDDP)

NEX GDDP- dataset is comprised of downscaled climate scenarios for the globe that are derived from the General Circulation Model (GCM) runs conducted under the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) and across two of the four greenhouse gas emissions scenarios known as Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs).

NEX-GDDP

NASA Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections (NEX-GDDP-CMIP6)

The NEX-GDDP-CMIP6 dataset is comprised of global downscaled climate scenarios derived from the General Circulation Model (GCM) runs conducted under the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) and across two of the four “Tier 1” greenhouse gas emissions scenarios known as Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs).

NASA Land Science High Resolution Data Delivery

CDS will be partnering with the University of Minnesota and NOAA's National Geodetic Survey to provide access to 1 PB of very-high resolution Land and Cryosphere geo-referenced image data for the purpose of sharing with the NASA community.

Ocean Data Assimilation System (ODAS)

CDS is partnering with the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) to provide access to the GMAO's GEOS iODAS, a model-independent system that focuses on the assimilation of remotely sensed sea surface height observations.

COLA Climate Model (NCEP CFSv2)

The Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA) used the National Center for Environmental Prediction's (NCEP) Climate Forecast System (CFSv2) to prepare CMIP5 decadal climate model simulations. CDS published their model output in the CMIP5 on the ESGF data node.

GISS ModelE

The Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) ModelE simulates different climate configurations, such as atmospheric chemistry, aerosols, carbon cycle, and standard atmosphere, ocean, sea ice and land components. CDS publishes GISS ModelE data in the CMIP5 project on the ESGF data node.

GMAO GEOS-5 Decadal Data

The Goddard Earth Observing System Model, Version 5 (GEOS-5) systems support NASA's earth science research in data analysis, observing system modeling and design, climate and weather prediction, and basic research. CDS publishes GMAO GEOS-5 Decadal data in the ESGF CMIP5 project to support the investigation of Global Climate Change.

GMAO GEOS-FP

The Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) generates GEOS-FP forecast and assimilation products for real time support for NASA field campaigns, NASA science, and GEOS system evaluation. CDS provides the data services that present the forecast data to their user communities.

NOAA NCEP Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR)

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) is a reanalysis of the coupled atmosphere, ocean, seaice and land over the 31-year period (1979-2009). CDS publishes the CFSR data in the ESGF ana4MIPs project (which was superseded by CREATE-IP) for the purpose of comparing IPCC AR5 Climate Model data to Reanalysis data.

CSS provides users internal access to centralized, commonly used data collections such as LANDSAT, MODIS, MERRA/MERRA2, and NGA*.

  • Datasets are not static–additional data is constantly being added.
  • *Access to NGA data and other non-public data collections require a signed agreement and adherence to specific usage policies.
